Challenging Munro Routes for Experienced Hillwalkers

Challenging Munro Routes for Experienced Hillwalkers

What Makes a Cairngorm Day a Big Day

The Cairngorms rarely serve up the sort of airy arete you will find on the west coast, and that catches people out. What they offer instead is scale. The high plateau sits above 1,000 metres for kilometres at a time, gashed by deep corries and long glens, and much of it looks remarkably similar in mist. A route that reads as a straightforward ridge walk on paper can become a ten-hour navigation exercise with 1,400 metres of ascent and no convenient path.

So a challenging Munro day here is less about technical scrambling and more about sustained effort, self-reliance and knowing exactly where you are when the ground turns featureless. Expect 25 to 35 kilometres, eight to twelve hours on the move, and long stretches where the only company is ptarmigan and the wind.

Routes That Earn Their Reputation

  • Cairn Toul, Sgor an Lochain Uaine and Braeriach — usually tackled from Linn of Dee via Derry Lodge and Corrour Bothy. Around 32 kilometres and 1,500 metres of ascent, with a steep pull onto Cairn Toul and a long, committing plateau traverse between the three summits. The return down the Lairig Ghru is brutal on tired legs.
  • Ben Macdui and Cairn Gorm via the Chalamain Gap — roughly 25 kilometres from the ski area car park. The boulder field in the Gap demands hands-on movement, and the plateau between Macdui and Cairn Lochan offers almost no handrails. Cornices on the Coire an t-Sneachda rim are a genuine hazard well into spring.
  • Beinn Mheadhoin and Bynack More — a long approach through Glen Avon, a short scramble onto the granite tors of Mheadhoin, then rough, pathless ground across to Bynack More. About 28 kilometres with plenty of heather and bog to slow you down.
  • The Lochnagar Munros from Glen Muick — a wide circuit taking in Lochnagar, Carn a'Choire Bhoidheach, Carn an t-Sagairt Mor and Cairn Bannoch. The plateau section requires careful compass work, especially if cloud sits low.

The Lairig Ghru itself deserves a mention. Walking it as a through-route is a fine day out, but once you are deep in the pass there is no quick escape, so treat it with respect rather than as a gentle glen stroll.

Weather, Daylight and Ground Conditions

Wind is the deciding factor on the plateau. Sustained speeds of 40 to 50 mph make forward progress exhausting and balance uncertain; anything above 60 mph means turning back, however good your fitness. Check a dedicated mountain forecast the evening before and again in the morning, and be honest about whether the window is genuinely there.

Daylight matters more than many walkers expect. In midwinter you may have fewer than seven hours of usable light, which rules out the big traverses entirely. Even in June, plan to finish in daylight rather than relying on a late sunset, because a navigational error in the dark on the plateau is costly. Snow can linger in north and east-facing corries into May, and old cornices often remain well into June.

Navigation and the Kit That Matters

Carry a paper map and compass and be genuinely competent with both. A GPS unit or phone app is a useful backup, never the primary tool. Practise pacing and timing on shorter outings so that counting your steps across a featureless kilometre becomes second nature.

  • Waterproof shell, insulated layer and spare gloves, even in summer
  • Group shelter or survival bag, whistle and headtorch with spare batteries
  • At least 2,500 calories of food and a hot flask for the summit
  • Crampons and an axe between November and April, and often beyond

Group Fitness, Pace and Turnaround Times

Agree a turnaround time before you leave the car park, based on the pace of the slowest person — not the fastest. Use Naismith's rule as a starting point, then add a third to the total for Cairngorm boulder fields and pathless heather. A route that seems achievable on paper at eight hours is realistically ten.

Keep the group together. Nominate a navigator and a back marker, and rotate the lead so nobody is carrying the mental load for twelve hours straight. Walk with your intended companions on shorter days first; you will learn far more about how they cope on a wet, windy circuit of two Munros than from any conversation about fitness.

Escape Routes and Knowing When to Turn Back

Study the map for exits before you go. Some glens offer a straightforward low-level bail-out; others commit you to the full circuit. Corrour Bothy provides shelter in the Lairig Ghru, but it is not a plan in itself, and it fills quickly in summer.

Leave a route card with someone responsible, including your intended summits, probable line of descent and a time by which they should raise the alarm. Mobile signal is patchy at best in the glens and nonexistent on much of the plateau, so consider carrying a personal locator beacon. Then enjoy it: a clear day on the Cairngorm plateau, with the whole of Scotland laid out below, is one of the finest rewards British hillwalking has to offer.
