Forest Trails Suitable for Pushchairs and Wheelchairs

Forest Trails Suitable for Pushchairs and Wheelchairs

Why the pinewoods work so well for wheels

The forests of Strathspey and the northern Cairngorms were worked for timber long before they were loved for days out, and that history has left us a quiet gift: miles of old forest road, wide enough for two to pass, surfaced in compacted gravel and graded so gently that you only notice the climb when you look back. Add the hard paths and boardwalks laid around the busier lochs, and you have a national park where a pushchair, a wheelchair or a mobility scooter can reach genuine Caledonian pinewood — the cracked old granny pines, the red squirrels, the smell of resin on a warm afternoon.

Be realistic as well as hopeful. A path described as "easy" in a leaflet may still hold tree roots, a short rise or a drainage channel. The routes below are the ones that consistently work for wheels, and each has somewhere to sit down, somewhere to park and somewhere to buy a cup of tea.

Loch an Eilein: the classic circuit

If you only manage one outing, make it this. The track around the loch, south of Aviemore, runs for roughly three miles through birch and pine, and the first stretch along the northern shore towards the island castle is the best all-abilities walking in the park: broad, level, firm underfoot and generously supplied with benches facing the water.

  • Surface: compacted gravel and stone dust for the first mile, with a couple of short boardwalk sections.
  • Watch for: beyond the castle viewpoint the going roughens, with exposed roots and a brief rise. Many families turn back here happily.
  • Facilities: a charged car park with hardstanding blue badge bays, toilets and a small café close to the entrance.
  • Timing: the car park fills by mid-morning in July and August. Arrive before ten, or come after four for softer light and fewer people.

Glenmore and the shores of Loch Morlich

The path along the northern shore of Loch Morlich is a level, gravel ribbon between the pines and a beach of pale sand, with the Cairngorm plateau filling the view ahead. It is firm enough for a standard wheelchair in dry weather and wide enough that nobody feels squeezed. Benches and picnic tables sit at intervals, and the lochside car park has blue badge spaces and toilets nearby.

The full circuit of the loch becomes rougher and narrower towards the western end, so treat the eastern half as the accessible stretch. Behind the beach, a network of forest roads climbs into the pines; the lower ones are gentle enough for a robust buggy, and they are wonderfully quiet once you are a few hundred metres from the sand.

Nethy Bridge and the Abernethy woods

From the village car park at Nethy Bridge, a riverside path follows the water through mixed woodland. It is largely level and firm, though a short slope and a season of heavy rain can soften it, so sturdy wheels help. The village itself has benches, a shop and a café, which makes it a sensible half-day rather than a there-and-back dash.

Deeper into Abernethy Forest, the main forest roads are wide, smooth and gently graded — ideal for wheels, and often empty on weekdays. Do respect the spring restrictions: between roughly April and June, some paths and trails are closed or ask for dogs on short leads to protect capercaillie and their chicks. Rangers put signs at the junctions, so read them rather than assume.

Boat of Garten and the quiet strath

The back roads and community paths around Boat of Garten are delightfully flat, and the firm path from the nearby lochside car park to the reserve centre is short, gentle and lined with benches and hides — a lovely option for a slow hour with binoculars. From late spring, ospreys fish over the water, and a wheelchair user can watch the whole performance from a level hide with a low viewing slot.

Elsewhere in the strath, several old railway lines and estate tracks have been resurfaced as multi-use paths. They tend to be straighter and flatter than forest trails, and they link villages with picnic spots, which suits families who want distance without effort.

Making the day work for everyone

  • Check for gates: many forest entrances have vehicle barriers with a side gate, but a few are tight for wheelchairs. Ring ahead if you are unsure.
  • Pack for four seasons: midge nets and repellent from May to September, sun hats in June, waterproofs always, and a spare layer — Highland weather turns quickly.
  • Winter note: paths are not gritted, and shaded pinewood tracks hold ice from November into March. Microspikes for pushers and care on slopes are wise.
  • Equipment: a few visitor sites lend all-terrain mobility scooters or off-road wheelchairs. These book out fast, so ask well before your visit.
  • Dogs: most of these routes welcome them, but leads are required near livestock and in the spring protection zones.
  • Pace yourself: aim for one trail in the morning and a café or picnic bench afterwards. Two accessible outings in a day is plenty in the Cairngorms.

Get the surface, the parking and the picnic right, and the pinewoods open up for grandparents, toddlers, wheelchair users and the family dog all at once. That, more than any summit, is what makes a Highland holiday memorable.
