Plan the Loop Before You Fill the Tank

The Cairngorms is the largest national park in the UK, and it rewards a driver who treats the journey as the day out rather than the means of getting somewhere. Distances on the map mean very little here. Forty miles of single-track can comfortably take two hours once you have paused for a mountain hare, waited for a herd of cattle, and stopped twice just to look.

Build in a full day for a circuit of roughly 80 to 100 miles, and start early. Summer mornings are quieter, car parks fill by mid-morning, and the light on the glens is at its best before the haze builds. Late August and September bring flowering heather and fewer visitors. In winter, the higher passes on the A939 and the A93 can close at short notice when snow gates come down, so check conditions on the morning itself, and carry warm layers, food, water and a scraper whatever the forecast promised yesterday.

The SnowRoads Circuit: A Classic Day Out

A satisfying loop begins at Aviemore and heads north-east through Boat of Garten and Nethy Bridge towards Grantown-on-Spey, where you join the A939. From there the road climbs through moorland to Tomintoul, one of the highest villages in the Highlands, and on past Cock Bridge to the Lecht pass. The summit sits at around 630 metres and the view back down the valley is the sort that makes people pull over.

From the Lecht the road drops through Strathdon towards Ballater, where you turn south onto the A93 for Braemar. The return leg retraces your route, and that is no hardship: a landscape read in reverse is a different landscape entirely. If you would rather not repeat a stretch, use Braemar as your turning point and head back over the Lecht, allowing time for a proper stop in Ballater on the way.

Two shorter alternatives suit a half-day. The run up Glen More and round to Loch Morlich gives you forest, water and mountain in under fifteen miles. Further west, the road through Newtonmore and Kingussie towards Laggan offers quieter tarmac and fewer coaches.

Stopping Places Worth Building the Day Around

Where you stop matters, both for your own safety and for the ground you are parking on. Verges in the national park are fragile, often waterlogged, and sometimes legally protected. Use recognised car parks, lay-bys with a solid surface and clear entrances, and never a passing place.

• Forest and reserve car parks. These are the best bases for a leg-stretch, with waymarked paths and, at some, seasonal toilets.
• Mountain lay-bys. Pull fully off the carriageway, clear of sightlines on bends, and treat them as a pause rather than a picnic site.
• Village car parks. Grantown-on-Spey, Tomintoul, Ballater and Braemar all let you leave the car and explore on foot for an hour.
• Riverside and lochside picnic spots. Take every crumb and wrapper away with you, and keep fires off dry ground.

Single-Track Roads: Passing Places and Unwritten Rules

Much of the best driving in the Cairngorms is on single-track road, and the etiquette is straightforward once you know it. Keep left, drive at a speed that lets you stop within the distance you can see, and treat every passing place as shared infrastructure rather than a private parking bay.

• If a passing place is on your left, pull into it and let the oncoming vehicle come through.
• If the passing place is on your right, stop opposite it and let the other driver use it.
• Never park in a passing place, not even for a photograph, and never block its entrance.
• Give way to traffic coming uphill, which may need momentum, and to larger, slower vehicles, cyclists, horse riders and anyone towing.
• If someone has waited for you, acknowledge it with a raised hand. A brief wave costs nothing and keeps the road friendly.
• Let faster traffic past. Pull into the next passing place and slow down so they can see you have seen them.
• If you meet where there is no passing place, the driver nearest one usually reverses. Do it without fuss.

Wildlife, Weather and the Things People Forget

Red deer move at dawn and dusk and are far harder to see than you would expect against a dark treeline. Sheep and cattle graze freely on open ground and have no road sense whatsoever. Slow right down on stretches bordered by native pinewood, where red squirrels, black grouse and the occasional capercaillie may cross.

Midges arrive in June and linger into August, worst on still, damp evenings, so keep repellent in the glovebox and the windows up when you stop. Fuel up in Aviemore, Grantown, Ballater or Braemar rather than relying on the next village, and remember that card-only pumps fail more often than you would like. Mobile signal disappears in the deeper glens, so tell someone your route and expected return.

Above all, leave slack in the day. The best moments on these roads are unplanned: a sudden view down a glen, a stag on the skyline, a cup of tea in the back of the car while the cloud lifts off the plateau. Drive slowly, stop often, and let the road do the work.
