The Cairngorms National Park is the largest in the UK, and it wears that scale lightly. You can wake to a view of heather-covered moorland rolling towards a granite plateau, spend the morning in ancient Caledonian pine forest, and be beside a silent loch by lunchtime. Where to Base Yourself: Glens, Villages and Quiet Edges

The park is big, and where you stay shapes your days. Aviemore and the Glenmore area put you close to Cairn Gorm, Loch Morlich and the Rothiemurchus forest, with the widest choice of lodges and the easiest access to shops and cafés. Braemar and Ballater suit walkers heading for the eastern Munros and the Lairig Ghru. Tomintoul and the Glenlivet area feel quieter, with rolling moorland, whisky country and exceptionally dark skies.

• Aviemore and Glenmore: best all-round base for families, forest trails and easy loch access.
• Braemar and Royal Deeside: grand glen views, high passes and a more remote feel.
• Kingussie and Newtonmore: handy for the western Monadhliath and Speyside, often better value.

If you want a hot tub with a view, the glens above these villages are where to look. The trade-off is usually a longer drive to the nearest shop, so plan your first-night food shop before you arrive.

Days Out: Moorland, Forest and Quiet Lochs

The Cairngorms is a place for low-level wandering as much as summit days. The plateau itself is arctic in character and demands proper kit, navigation and a check on the mountain weather forecast. For many visitors, the best days are spent below the skyline, on paths that thread through pinewoods and along the shores of lochs.

Remember that the weather changes fast. A morning that starts clear can turn to mist and rain on the tops within an hour, so carry layers, a map and compass, and tell someone your route. Midges are a fact of life from June to August, particularly at dusk near water – a head net and repellent earn their place in your bag.

Practical Planning: When to Go and What to Book

Luxury lodges with mountain views book up early for school holidays, Christmas and New Year, and the September and October weeks when the glens turn gold and the midges retreat. If you have flexibility, late spring and early autumn offer the best combination of light, quiet and value.

Book the lodge first, then plan your days around it. Check cancellation terms, whether a damage deposit applies, and what is included in the price. Arrive with a stocked fridge, a full tank of fuel and a rough plan, and the rest – the hot tub, the log fire and the wide glen view – will take care of itself.
