Why the Cairngorms Suits Pitching Families

The Cairngorms is the largest national park in the UK, and that scale works in your favour when you are travelling with children. You can pitch beside ancient pine woods at Glenmore or Rothiemurchus, walk twenty minutes to a sheltered loch shore, and still be within easy reach of a shop, a chip shop and a swimming pool. The landscape is big enough to feel like a proper adventure, but the main family sites are clustered in a fairly small area around Aviemore, Boat of Garten, Carrbridge, Nethy Bridge and Grantown-on-Spey, so you are never more than half an hour from a fallback plan.

Do bear in mind the altitude. Much of the park sits at 200–400 metres, and the weather changes faster than the forecast suggests. A warm afternoon beside Loch Morlich can turn into a cold, drizzly evening within an hour. Pack fleeces, waterproofs and a decent groundsheet, and treat sunshine as a bonus rather than a promise.

What to Look for in a Family-Friendly Site

Not every Highland site is built with children in mind, so it pays to check a few specifics before you book.

• Distance to the facilities block. Ask how far the pitch is from the showers. A five-minute walk in daylight is a very different prospect at 6am with a sleepy four-year-old.
• Family bathrooms. Wet rooms with a bath or a large changing area make bedtime and post-swim clean-ups far easier than a single shower cubicle.
• Pitch surface. Hardstanding is kinder to caravans and motorhomes after rain; grass is softer under tents but can get boggy in a wet spell.
• Play areas and open space. A small playground, a football field or a safe cycle loop around the site keeps everyone occupied while you cook.
• Campfire policy. Some sites allow raised fire pits or braziers only, and some ban fires entirely during dry spells. Check before you load the wood.
• Quiet hours. Most sites ask for silence between 10.30pm and 7am — worth knowing if you have a baby who needs the whole evening to settle.

Tents, Tourers and Static Caravans

The Cairngorms caters for all three, and mixing them up is one of the easiest planning mistakes. Tent pitches are usually on grass and often unmarked, so you can spread out a little. Touring pitches tend to come with a 16-amp electric hook-up, a gravel or hardstanding base and space for an awning — useful when you want a dry porch for boots and wet coats. Static caravans and lodges are the simplest option if you are travelling with grandparents or want a solid roof for a week of mixed weather.

If you are in a tent, upgrade your pegs. Standard wire pegs pull out of soft Highland ground in a gust, and storms arrive with little warning. Take storm straps, a spare guy line and a mallet, and pitch with the door facing away from the prevailing south-westerly wind.

Shower Blocks, Laundry and the Small Comforts

Facilities in the park vary from basic to genuinely plush, so it is worth reading the detail rather than assuming. Timed showers are common, sometimes operated by a token from reception, and a ten-minute limit is plenty once you are used to it. Look out for:

• Free or token-operated showers, plus a separate family wet room
• A pot-washing area with hot water and draining boards
• Laundry with washer and dryer — invaluable on a two-week trip
• A drying room for waterproofs, wetsuits and walking boots
• Chemical disposal point and grey-water emptying for tourers
• Recycling and general waste points, plus a freezer for ice packs

Take a small washbag caddy, flip-flops for the shower floor and a head torch for late-night trips across the site.

Wet Afternoon Backup Plans

Rain is part of the deal, so build in an indoor option for every second day and you will enjoy the trip far more. Good standbys include the swimming pools at Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey, the wildlife and visitor centres scattered through the park, small local museums, soft play, a cinema, and the indoor climbing wall at Aviemore. A drive to a castle or a distillery visitor centre also fills a damp few hours nicely.

On-site, keep a wet-weather box in the car: board games, playing cards, a deck of Top Trumps, colouring books, a tablet with downloaded films and a flask. If you have a tarp and poles, rig a covered area over the picnic table — it turns a rainy afternoon into a perfectly sociable one.

Booking, Season and Highland Etiquette

July and August fill up months ahead, and many sites impose a two or three-night minimum in high season. Book early, confirm your arrival window, and ask about late arrivals. Scottish midges are at their worst from late June to early August, particularly at dusk near water and trees, so pack midge nets, a repellent and long sleeves for the evening. Check for ticks after walks in long grass, and always supervise children near lochs — the water is colder and deeper than it looks.

Finally, follow the leave-no-trace basics: use designated fire pits, take rubbish home if bins are full, keep dogs on leads around livestock, and respect any seasonal camping restrictions in popular glens. Do that, and you will be welcome back in the Cairngorms for years to come.
